Welcome to our Gorgeous Guest series for 2017! This year I wanted to share with you my favourite women in business. We talk about the challenges they face in their business/career, overcoming “busy-ness”, and what motivates them on a daily basis. Grab a tea, juice or wine and get ready to be inspired!
Introducing our first Gorgeous Guest…Anna from AnnaJohnsonHill.com.
Tell us a little about yourself and how you’re making an impact on this world.
My name is Anna Johnson-Hill and I am a work-life balance warrior, integrative health coach, speaker and vlogger. I believe that we have the power to create our ideal lifestyles and the work-life balance we desire.
Back in 2012, I was a party-going girl with zero respect for myself. I was the biggest binger alive – on food, alcohol, TV, toxic relationships. Anything that numbed my insides, fed the voices that said I wasn’t worthy and suppressed the voice that said I could do better.
My negative self-talk that was leading me down a dangerous path. It was only with the guidance of mentors and coaches that I started truly believing I could be better.
My sense of self-worth skyrocketed which had a ripple effect on all other areas of my life, including my business. I cared about what I ate and whether I exercised. It also meant that I was conscious of taking care of myself and stopping burn out.
I want others to know the power of filling up their own cup first as well. I see so many people running through life on auto-pilot and going through the motions of a 9-5 existence that doesn’t light them up. It’s torturous to watch, especially those closest to me.
Because I now know that it is possible to create what you want in life – I’m living proof. I know that if you are aware of what you want and take consistent action – it is guaranteed that you’ll get where you want to be. I’m helping anyone who is ready to make it happen.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your business/career? How did you overcome this challenge?
My biggest challenge to my business has been getting over my own limiting beliefs. Every time I’ve reached a new level in my business it is because I have overcome a belief that was holding me back.
These days I’m focusing on following what feels good for me. I understand the importance of looking after my own health and the amazing flow on effects this has in all other areas of life, including my business.
My transformation has been a lot about mindset and the mindset work is never done if you want to keep evolving. But the most important thing I’ve learnt is to get out of my own way and know that I have my own back no matter what.
In recent times women have used the words “hustle” and “busyness” as badges of honour. Having experienced the impacts on my own health of being too busy, I am on a mission to change the mindset women have towards busyness. What is your take on these concepts? Do you have any personal stories to share?
The current mentality of ‘busyness’ and ‘hustle’ concerns me to such an extent that I am writing a PhD on the topic. I want to make people aware that work-life balance is lacking.
In this age of technology we aren’t switching off. We’re busy at work and busy at home. Being busy is glorified. If someone asked how you are and you say that you’re busy – that is seen as an accomplishment.
Would it not be a greater accomplishment to be unbusy? To say, ‘My schedule has been really full lately, so today I just took it easy and went to the beach’. That self-awareness to look after ourselves is lacking.
If people were to look after themselves first, then so many benefits would follow – including being more productive at work.
In our consumer society, we are paying more attention to how we spend our money than how we spend our time. We can always make more money, but not more time. I think focusing on our use of time is the answer to finding an ideal work-life balance.
What is your favourite book, website or podcast at the moment?
I’m loving the Merrymaker Sisters right now which you can check out at themerrymakersisters.com.au. Emma and Carla share amazing, healthy recipes and have such a positive, merry energy about them. I tried out 6 of their raw dessert recipes over Christmas including their paleo chocolate mint slice and healthy salted caramel slice recipes and they were such a hit with the fam.
